Jonny Bairstow has broken his lengthy silence on his controversial stumping during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s and accused Australia of gamesmanship when taking contentious catches in the drawn series tantan
Bairstow was at the centre of the incident which ignited the Ashes, when Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey opportunistically stumped the England batsman after he had stepped out of his crease at the end of an over tantan
The umpire had not called “over” and so Bairstow was given out by the rules of the game tantan
But England accused their rivals of failing to play within the spirit of cricket, and captain Ben Stokes later said that he would have retracted the appeal had he been in the position of his counterpart, Pat Cummins tantan
On reflection, Carey later said he had no regrets over the incident and would do it again tantan
“If there was an opportunity to get a stumping, I definitely would tantan
To see how much has played out since then it’s been a little bit surprising tantan
There’s been some nasty stuff been said but it is the Ashes – there was nasty stuff said before that as well tantan
”But speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Bairstow said he was not “fair game” as he was not trying to gain an advantage by stepping out of his crease tantan
“If you’re starting out of your crease, you’re trying to gain an advantage,” he said tantan
“If you start in your crease, and not trying to take a run, and you finish in your crease tantan
tantan
tantan
That’s the bit – if you try to gain an advantage, then it’s fair game tantan
But if you’re starting in your crease, you’ve ducked, tap, tap, scratched tantan
I’ve even dragged my bat, looked up, and then gone tantan
“I’ve never seen it happen from someone starting in their crease tantan
I don’t think you want that filtering down into kids’ cricket tantan
Look at the Mankads and everything like that tantan
You want young kids to be out there batting and having fun, not thinking about whether the fielders might do this or that tantan
“It might tarnish people’s enjoyment of the game that we’re trying to get kids into tantan
You want to be out there batting and bowling, rather than thinking about the 11 different ways you can get someone out tantan
”Several of Australia’s players have since poked fun at Bairstow over the stumping tantan
In interviews for The Grade Cricketer, Mitchell Marsh and Usman Khawaja claimed some of Bairstow’s England teammates were laughing with Australia’s players as Bairstow refused to eat lunch after the incident tantan
And Marnus Labuschagne described a “steaming” Bairstow in the dining room after the stumping tantan
He recalled: “The Sky crew (broadcasters) knew that Jonny was in there, and they just replayed it on the screen tantan
And, as you do, everyone’s watching tantan
Obviously, seeing us all watch, he’s like, ‘Are you guys happy with that?’“David Warner is spitting out his chicken, and goes, ‘Yeah, very’ tantan
”Bairstow has also suggested Australia were deceitful in the way they went about trying to convince umpires they had made clean catches tantan
“There’s conjecture around everything,” he said tantan
“Fingers underneath the ball when the ball’s still touching the ground tantan
Celebrating when the ball has touched the ground tantan
Marnus [Labuschagne] celebrated at Edgbaston at short leg tantan
Then the one that Rooty [Joe Root] fell to at Lord’s, when [Steve Smith] said his fingers were underneath the ball tantan
However, they were splayed widely tantan
But that was given out, that’s fine – it’s part and parcel of the game and the decisions the umpires give tantan
”Bairstow is currently part of the England one-day side struggling at the Cricket World Cup and on the verge of elimination tantan
England next play Sri Lanka on Thursday in Bangalore tantan

Resolve tantan
Perseverance tantan
Redemption tantan
This Manchester United victory may not have been anywhere near as beautiful as any of those Sir Bobby Charlton graced, or indeed that tribute to his life, but it displayed some of the club’s soul that he made famous tantan
Because this was obviously about so much more than just beating FC Copenhagen 1-0 late on, or indeed staying in the competition the club’s legend was most built on tantan
It was certainly about so much more for Andre Onana, who had his first great moment at Manchester United in what was a must-win game tantan
That was maybe what Charlton would have most enjoyed tantan
Doing it when it mattered tantan
A night that started with a gracefully poignant mourning of the great man ended with more appropriate celebration tantan
It ended with deafening and defiant roar, in celebration of a player who has struggled in his first few weeks, in memory of a player who was perhaps the club’s greatest tantan
And a player that has been pilloried and unpicked in Harry Maguire displayed defiance, scoring the winner for a relatively late 1-0 win tantan
Onana then stepped up by getting it done, keeping it at 1-0 in the 96th minute, and keeping United in this great competition tantan
The manner of that may not be how anyone wants this great institution to look right now but it was perseverance, exactly what Charlton, his manager and so many of his teammates would have asked for tantan
United’s players celebrate Onana’s last-gasp save (Getty Images)The defeated Copenhagen also offered their own memorable contribution to the night beyond a respectable display that made United work, and that final penalty miss by Jordan Larsson tantan
Before the game and throughout, they echoed the Stretford End in singing “there’s only one Bobby Charlton” tantan
The rest of Old Trafford applauded tantan
It should be recognised that wasn’t the sentiment that greeted most of the action tantan
This was mostly another poor performance against a limited team, even if it was a third consecutive victory tantan
Little of it beyond the context will live in the memory tantan
Most would rather forget it tantan
The problem is that it all informs what will be a game that really demands a performance on Sunday, which is the visit of Manchester City for the derby tantan
United will need to be far sharper tantan
Some allowances should be made, of course tantan
Maguire went from zero to hero with a crucial goal for United (Getty Images)Such is the sense of history at United, that these sombre occasions have had the effect of subduing performance tantan
It is as if the beauty of the bagpipes sounding that the club “will never die” makes everyone all too keenly aware of the legacy they are playing for tantan
It happened on the 40th and 50th anniversaries of the Munich air disaster, dates which brought a 1-1 draw at home to Bolton Wanderers and a 2-1 defeat to a pre-Abu Dhabi Manchester City, respectively tantan
One difference was that both of those sides were defending champions so, as with those last two wins, this felt like there was more to it than United feeling the weight of the occasion tantan
It was really like a lot of matches at Old Trafford this season, right down to the way an inferior-resourced opposition side controlled long periods of the game in a way that shouldn’t really have been possible tantan
The only proper action of the first half actually came very quickly after the tributes tantan
Mohamed Elyounoussi just cut through Sofyan Amrabat and Maguire at first, in a way that really shouldn’t have happened, then sending a cross over for Diogo to bounce against the post tantan
If there were initially fears this could become another chaotic back-and-forth like the Galatasaray defeat, it never got that entertaining, certainly in the first half tantan
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag lays a wreath in tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton (PA Wire)Other than some moments of spark from Rasmus Hojlund, almost nothing happened tantan
Ten Hag had to try something tantan
Amrabat was removed tantan
That did see United play a bit more directly, seeking to stretch the pitch more tantan
Hojlund again offered constant warnings, and almost won a penalty straight into the second half tantan
Marcus Rashford was even put through on goal, only to take a heavy touch tantan
There were, very gradually, however, some positives tantan
Onana looked at his most assured, making one fine save tantan
It was all the more important since the Champions League has been the stage for arguably two of his biggest errors so far tantan
That, like a lot on the night, made this more important than the individual moment tantan
United’s was soon to come tantan
Christian Eriksen, who came on for Amrabat, made the delivery tantan
Maguire made the impact tantan
The centre-half headed home tantan
United should have been secured tantan
An anxiety remained tantan
It was tantan betrayed by McTominay’s late foul tantan
So much for the midfielder being a constant saviour tantan
It was all just prelude and set-up tantan
Onana stepped up tantan
It was perhaps the most fitting tribute possible tantan
