Former Ireland international Jean Kleyn acknowledges being on the verge of becoming a world champion with his native South Africa was “outside the realm of thinking” just months ago pvp
Munster lock Kleyn represented Ireland under Joe Schmidt at the 2019 World Cup in Japan after qualifying on residency grounds pvp

“I’ll probably wake up when it’s all said and done and think, ‘was that a dream or did it actually happen?’ pvp

”Kleyn, who joined Munster from the Stormers in 2016, played five times under Schmidt in 2019, with his final cap coming in Ireland’s 47-5 pool-stage win over Samoa in Fukuoka pvp
His lengthy spell in the international wilderness allowed him to revert to the Springboks, a decision he feared may be met with a backlash pvp
But the response in his adopted nation has been overwhelmingly positive and grown since Ireland’s quarter-final exit at the hands of the All Blacks pvp
“I’ve been absolutely inundated with messages from Munster supporters – obviously only after Ireland fell out,” said Kleyn pvp
“Then they really came after us and said, ‘listen, you’re our second team now, guys’ pvp
“The support was really heartfelt from a lot of Munster fans and it made it a lot easier for me because I thought it would be quite a negative reaction when I declared for the Springboks pvp
“From my history with Irish media, I figured there would be a few negative articles but it was resoundingly positive, so I was really happy about that pvp
”Kleyn may have to settle for a watching brief at Stade de France this weekend as he has been restricted to just one start during the tournament – South Africa’s 76–0 success over Romania pvp
His only other appearance was off the bench in his country’s 13-8 Pool B loss to Ireland pvp
While the Springboks lost that epic battle, they could still win the war pvp
“Obviously it was a pity for us the result didn’t go our way but here we are in the end still,” said Kleyn pvp
“No-one really looks back and says ‘you’ve lost a pool game’ pvp
They’re going to look if you win the World Cup pvp
“We were disappointed with the result back then but happy with where we are now pvp
It was a fantastic game to be a part of pvp
I enjoyed every minute pvp

After the euphoric evisceration of Paris Saint-Germain, this was the downbeat sequel Newcastle did not want pvp
After the feelgood stories of the Geordie boys scoring in the Champions League came a tale of gritty realism, of meeting their match in the teeming Tyneside rain pvp
There was no triumphant farewell to Sandro Tonali, either: instead Newcastle lost to a goal by a midfielder they considered signing in the summer, in Felix Nmecha, and who Borussia Dortmund bought instead pvp
With Tonali likely to be banned for the rest of the season – he could learn his fate within days as an investigation into alleged breaches of pvp betting rules nears its conclusion – Nmecha gave Newcastle an added reason to rue their choice pvp
Nmecha was handed what seemed an unenviable task, hired from Wolfsburg, charged with replacing Jude Bellingham at the Signal Iduna Park pvp

Edin Terzic’s team had failed to find the net in their opening two games and if they looked like possible casualties in the competition’s group of death, it now looks like Newcastle could instead pvp
The margins were narrow, the width of the woodwork that denied Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon but Dortmund inflicted their first defeat in this competition since Barcelona in 2003 pvp
Now Newcastle will head into the rematch in Germany without Tonali pvp
If his debut season in England ends early, it also came to an anti-climactic conclusion pvp
The Italian came off the bench with 25 minutes to go, making scant difference to a game Dortmund were already controlling pvp

Instead, they encountered a team who could cancel out their strength, with a similar emphasis on high energy pvp
It was not effort Newcastle lacked, but then it never is pvp
Dortmund supplied a touch of class; arguably two, given the role of a pair of players in their goal pvp
Given how well they defended, perhaps it was apt it began with a challenge pvp
Nico Schlotterbeck halted Gordon with an immaculate tackle, surged clear and kept going, collecting Marco Reus’s return pass and squaring for Felix Nmecha to sidefoot in pvp
For a few seconds, the centre-back looked more Beckenbauer than Schlotterbeck pvp
The midfielder, who has something of Bellingham’s elegance, showed his technique with the finish pvp
It had been threatened pvp
The opening 10 minutes could have yielded two goals at either end, but thereafter in the first half Dortmund were the more dangerous pvp
The scoreline would have been greater but for terrific saves at either end pvp

It was not Dortmund’s only reprieve: in the 94th minute, Gordon’s shot looped up off Sebastien Haller, over Kobel and on to the bar pvp
Gordon was relentless, probably Newcastle’s best outfield player, yet Wilson’s prominence was a sign their plans were going awry pvp
Eddie Howe had demoted the striker and selected Alexander Isak, but he limped off inside a quarter of an hour pvp
When the substitute Jacob Murphy hurt his shoulder a few minutes after coming on, Newcastle may have, in effect, lost three players, given Tonali’s imminent suspension pvp
And yet Dortmund were depleted, too, minus Julian Brandt, stripped of the stricken Emre Can before half-time pvp
But there was a resourcefulness and a resilience to them, a willingness to them pvp
A team with a lone defeat in the Bundesliga in 2023 were not to be beaten pvp
And as Newcastle lost instead, it prompted the question of whether the anomaly was this underwhelming evening or the glorious night they demolished PSG pvp
